Mentrep

Mentrep

Sinclair Lewis

The work is a blend of satire, love story, and adventure, depicting the conflict between civilized city life and the allure of the wilderness.

The main character is Ralph Prescott, a successful New York lawyer who is tired of his busy life and daily routine. His friend persuades him to travel to the small town of Mantrap in the Canadian wilderness to rest and find peace. In Mantrap, he meets Joe Easter, a store owner and a rough man accustomed to life in the countryside, and his young and attractive wife Alverna. Ralph gradually becomes fascinated with Alverna, who feels trapped in the harsh and monotonous life of the wilderness. Emotional and romantic tension develops between Ralph and Alverna. The two try to escape from Mantrap, but they are accompanied by insecurity, moral doubts and fear of the consequences. Through their adventure, Lewis shows how complex human desires, jealousy and the search for freedom are.
