Das Buch beginnt mit den kosmologischen Anfängen (Urknall, Entstehung des Universums und der Erde), behandelt geologische Zeitalter, das Auftreten des Lebens (Einzeller, Fische, Amphibien, Reptilien, Dinosaurier), Massenaussterben, die Evolution der Säugetiere und schließlich das Auftreten des Menschen: Hominiden, Homo erectus, Neandertaler, Homo sapiens, die ersten Werkzeuge, Kunst (Höhlenmalereien), Jagen und Sammeln sowie die Neolithische Revolution (Ackerbau, Viehzucht, erste Siedlungen).

Der Text ist klar und prägnant und enthält zahlreiche chronologische Darstellungen, Karten, Rekonstruktionen und Abbildungen von Fossilien und Artefakten. Ziel ist es, die Wissenschaft von der Entstehung der Welt und der Menschheit populärwissenschaftlich zu vermitteln, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf Schlüsselereignissen und -veränderungen liegt.
