Knjiga počinje kosmološkim počecima (Veliki prasak, nastanak univerzuma i Zemlje), prelazi na geološke ere, pojavu života (jednoćelijski organizmi, ribe, vodozemci, gmizavci, dinosaurusi), masovna izumiranja, evoluciju sisara i konačno pojavu ljudi: hominidi, Homo erektus, neandertalci, Homo sapiens, prvi alati, umetnost (crteži u pećinama), lov i sakupljanje i neolitska revolucija (poljoprivreda, stočarstvo, prva naselja).

Tekst je jasan, koncizan, sa obiljem hronoloških okvira, mapa, rekonstrukcija i fotografija fosila/artefakata. Cilj je popularizacija nauke o poreklu sveta i čovečanstva, sa akcentom na ključne događaje i promene.
