U svom najboljem djelu, Germinal , Émile Zola je realistično, do najsitnijih detalja opisao neljudske uvjete života i rada rudara u sjevernoj Francuskoj 60-ih godina 19. stoljeća. Središnji lik romana, Etienne Lantier, novi radnik u jami, nađe se u ulozi vođe štrajka protiv sniženja nadnica, no ta je borba unaprijed osuđena na propast, a donijet će i užasne posljedice.

Germinal , roman o životu radnika, seksualnoj požudi i međuljudskim odnosima, trinaesta je knjiga iz ciklusa Rougon-Macquartovi i predstavlja vrhunac Zolina stvaralaštva, u kojemu je taj predvodnik književnog naturalizma na najučinkovitiji način spojio dokumentarizam s poezijom, stvarnost s mitom te stao uz bok Balzacu, Stendhalu i Flaubertu, velikanima francuske književnosti 19. stoljeća
