Dnevnik Adama i Eve i druge pripovijetke

Mark Twain

The Diary of Adam and Eve and Other Stories brings together Twain's short prose in which humor, irony, and satire combine with reflections on love, human nature, society, and everyday weaknesses.

The Diary of Adam and Eve and Other Stories shows Mark Twain in one of his most subtle and versatile prose registers - in short form, where humor, satire, parable and sentimentality are not mutually exclusive, but complement each other.

The title text, known from the series Excerpts from Adam's Diary and Eve's Diary, starts from the biblical story of the first people, but transforms it into a humorous and unobtrusively touching miniature about different ways of looking at the world. Adam is reserved, practical and confused by Eve's liveliness, while Eve is curious, sensitive and inclined to name, interpret and attribute meaning to everything she sees. From this incongruity Twain derives comedy, but also gradually builds a story about attachment, togetherness and loss.

In the wider selection of stories, other important aspects of Twain's writing come to the fore: a penchant for the absurd, a precise observation of human vanity, a distrust of social conventions, and a special gift for the narrative twist. His short prose often begins with a simple premise and ends as a satirical commentary on morality, belief, credulity, or complacency. This is their enduring strength: behind the levity and humor there is always a sharp insight into human behavior.

This book is also important because it shows Twain beyond the framework of his most famous novels. It reveals an author who is as convincing in short prose as in adventure or travel narrative - witty, precise, and surprisingly gentle when writing about intimacy, loneliness, and transience.
