The work depicts the author's childhood in the African society of Guinea, his family life, customs, beliefs, and growing up between traditional culture and modern education.

The novel is written in a lyrical and warm style and provides a vivid depiction of African life, tradition, and the coming of age of a young man. It is considered an important work of African literature because it combines personal experience with a depiction of cultural identity and the colonial period.
