Djelo prikazuje autorovo djetinjstvo u afričkom društvu Gvineje, njegov obiteljski život, običaje, vjerovanja i odrastanje između tradicionalne kulture i modernog obrazovanja.

Kroz priču dječak upoznaje vrijednosti rada, poštovanja prema obitelji i zajednici, ali i izazove odvajanja od doma radi školovanja. Roman je pisan lirskim i toplim stilom te daje živ prikaz afričkog života, tradicije i sazrijevanja mladog čovjeka. Smatra se važnim djelom afričke književnosti jer spaja osobno iskustvo s prikazom kulturnog identiteta i kolonijalnog razdoblja.
