Stipe Juras

Ruby, a teenager from Vinkovci, heads to Zadar alone for the seaside a week before her parents. A summer full of freedom, friendships, love dilemmas and growing up intertwines with Katja's story from "The Kiss at the Crossroads".

The main character is Ruby from Vinkovci who in the summer of 2007 goes alone to Zadar for a week before her parents – her first real freedom. The novel follows her adventures, encounters with new people, friendships, first loves, music scenes and numerous challenges of growing up. Ruby and her friend Katja (from Marija Renić's novel Poljubac na kraskrižju) go through similar events, but from different perspectives. The books were written in parallel with the collaboration of the authors, so the characters and the plot are intertwined – reading both gives the complete picture.

The plot is dynamic, structured in 30 chapters, full of fast rhythm, witty dialogues and authentic teenage themes: the search for identity, family problems, independence, love, betrayal, music (punk/alternative/rock), parties and facing responsibility before the girls really wanted it. The characters are mostly inspired by real people, and the geographical descriptions and most of the events are based on real experiences.

The novel ends with an unexpected denouement that leaves room for a sequel. It is energetic, realistic and without idealizing youth – it shows both the bright and dark sides of teenage summer. Stipe Juras (born 1976) wrote it in collaboration with the young author Marija Renić, and the book exudes rock'n'roll spirit, humor and the authenticity of the Slavonian-Dalmatian context.
