Poslije smrti

Poslije smrti

Ivan S. Turgenjev

A mystical and tragic novella about the lonely Jakov, who becomes obsessed with the image of the mysterious Klara following her suicide, blurring the boundaries between reality, death, and love.

"After Death" (also known by the title "Klara Milich") is one of the final works by the great Russian writer Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev, written in 1882. This novella belongs to the author's late period, during which he moved away from socio-political themes to focus on mysticism, psychology, the irrational, and the mysterious forces governing human destiny. The plot follows Yakov Aratov, a withdrawn and sensitive young man living a solitary life devoted to his studies. His daily routine changes dramatically after he meets Klara Milich, an unusual and passionate young actress. Although he shows little interest in her at their first meeting, Yakov soon learns that Klara has committed suicide by taking poison on stage. Following her death, Yakov is consumed by a sense of guilt and an inexplicable obsession. Klara begins to appear to him in dreams and visions, causing the boundary between the real world and the afterlife to blur. In this novella, Turgenev masterfully explores the power of love transcending death, the realm of the unconscious, and the tragedy of human loneliness, crafting a tense, dark, and atmospheric tale that foreshadows elements of literary symbolism.
