Rječnik simbola : mitovi, sni, običaji, geste, oblici, likovi, boje, brojevi

Jean Chevalier, Alain Gheerbrant

The second, updated edition of the "Dictionary of Symbols" contains over 1,000 entries with a large number of illustrations that attempt to encompass the full diversity of symbolic meanings and interpretations of myths, dreams, customs, gestures, shapes,

This "Dictionary of Symbols" is first and foremost a list, which will never be complete, of the symbolic fruits of the imagination, which is the meeting point of the entire human psychic life: in it feelings merge with desires, cognitions with dreams, the conscious with the unconscious. The role of this work is also to encourage the discovery of the most often hidden meanings of an individual being, expression, property, sound, movement, word, color and number. Everything is a sign and every sign has a meaning. But we most often notice only the surface. A sign, however, is a thick book full of pages of meaning.

In the corpus of data collected here, a complete system of interpretation is discernible, in the elaboration of which every reader of this book can participate. It will help us discover possible directions of research, prompting us, but without imposing anything on us. Symbolic value is realized differently for everyone at the moment when a relationship is established between the sign as an instigator and the subject as a researcher, which characterizes tension and intentionality. Then a communication path opens between the hidden meaning of a particular expression and the unconscious reality of expectations. To symbolize means to live together in a certain way and on a certain level.
