Charles Darwin

Charles Darwin

Charles Robert Darwin (1809–1882) was a British naturalist, geologist, and biologist, best known for developing the theory of evolution by natural selection. He was born on February 12, 1809, in Shrewsbury, England. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and later theology at Cambridge, though his primary interest lay in the natural sciences.

In 1831, he embarked on a five-year scientific expedition aboard the HMS Beagle. During the voyage, he explored South America, the Galápagos Islands, Australia, and other regions. He studied plants, animals, fossils, and geological phenomena, gathering data that would later form the foundation of his scientific theories. He was particularly interested in the differences between related species and how they adapt to their environments.

Upon returning to England, he dedicated himself to research and writing. In 1839, he published a travelogue titled Journal of Researches (also known as The Voyage of the Beagle), in which he described his observations and experiences. His most famous work, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection (1859), transformed the prevailing understanding of the origin and development of living organisms. In it, he explained how species gradually change and adapt to the conditions of their environment. Among his significant works are The Descent of Man (1871), in which he examines human evolution; The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals (1872); and The Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication (1868). He also conducted research on coral reefs, insects, and plants.

Darwin died on April 19, 1882, at Down House in England, and was buried in Westminster Abbey in London. His scientific work profoundly influenced the development of biology and the modern understanding of nature. Today, he is considered one of the most important scientists in history.
