Šenoin roman “Seljačka buna” izlaže socijalne i političke prilike u Hrvatskoj tijekom 16. stoljeća, kako bi čitatelju objasnio pravi uzrok bune. Naime, nakon poraza Ivana Zapolje protiv Ferdinanda Habzburškog u ratu za vlast u Hrvatskoj došlo je do podjele plemstva i bezvlašća. Pridoda li se i opasnost od Turaka, prilike se dodatno kompliciraju.
