Jadranka 1-7

Marija Jurić Zagorka

"Jadranka 1-7" is a collection of seven historical novels by Marija Jurić Zagorka, published under a joint title in 1977. The series combines adventure, love, and national motifs in the Croatian past, from the Middle Ages to the 19th century.

Zagorka, the first Croatian professional journalist, criticizes social injustices, Germanization, and patriarchy through dynamic plots and strong female characters.

  1. Jadranka (mid-19th century, Bach's absolutism): The main character Vjeran, a nobleman, fights against Germanization and class conflicts in Zagreb. He falls in love with Jadran, a poor girl, while facing political intrigues and foreign attacks on Croatian treasures. The novel criticizes absolutism and celebrates Croatian resistance.

2.-3. The Burning Inquisitors I-II (13th century, Croatia-Hungary): Events surrounding the reign of King Stephen VI. Kuman. The focus is on the Church's fight against the Bogomils, conflicts with Rudolf of Habsburg and the Czech king. Three couples in love – from noblemen to peasants – live passionate stories amidst religious intolerance and national tensions. Zagorka depicts the Gothic atmosphere of Grič, Buda, and Požega.

  1. Kamen na cesti (20th century, autobiographical elements): A realistic novel about a girl named Mirjana, whose mother sends her to a godmother to "teach her good manners". Confronting a toxic family, a sick relative and patriarchal norms. Zagorka explores female identity, social obstacles and the struggle for independence, revealing her own traumas.

  2. Republicans (early 19th century, Napoleonic era): The young noblewoman Dorothea, brave and proud, falls in love with Martin, the leader of the Jacobin conspiracy by Ignjat Martinović (1794). A novel about political struggles against feudalism, espionage and revolutionary ideals. Zagorka celebrates liberalism and Strossmayer's ideas.

  3. Knight of the Slavonian Plain (mid-18th century, Slavonia): A mysterious knight fights against bandits in dark Slavonia. Set in Osijek and the surrounding area, with motifs of revenge and justice. Zagorka's only novel outside of Zagreb, inspired by local history; emphasizes courage and national solidarity.

  4. Daughter of Lotrščak (16th century, Zagreb): A love story between Manduša, a golden-haired girl from Grič, and Divljan, a brave hero. Amid political intrigue and oral tradition, Manduša fights for love and freedom. The novel combines romance with historical events, celebrating female strength.

The series exudes Zagorka's passion for Croatian history and women's emancipation, with speed and pseudo-romantic episodes. In total, over 3,000 pages of adventure and pathos.
