The book English Literature presents an overview of the development of English literature through the work of several authors. It covers key periods, writers, and stylistic trends, providing a systematic insight into the historical and aesthetic context.

English Literature is a fundamental and systematically designed work that provides a broad overview of the development of the English literary tradition over several centuries. The book was written by numerous distinguished authors and edited by Breda Kogoj-Kapetanić and Ivo Vidan, thus achieving a combination of different approaches and professional perspectives. The work covers periods from the earliest Anglo-Saxon texts and medieval literature, through the Renaissance with an emphasis on dramatic and poetic production, then Classicism and the Enlightenment, all the way to the richly branched currents of Romanticism, the Victorian era, Modernism and 20th-century literature.

Each chapter provides an overview of the historical circumstances that shaped the literary expression of a particular period, with detailed considerations of key authors, their aesthetic procedures and thematic preoccupations. Special attention is paid to the development of literary genres and genres – poetry, novels, essays and drama – as well as to the transformations that took place within the framework of social, intellectual and cultural changes. The book highlights and expands the international influence of English literature, showing how individual authors, such as those from the Renaissance and Modernist periods, shaped later literary trends outside the English-speaking world.

Due to its clearly organized structure, understandable style, and scholarly foundation, the work serves as a valuable resource for students of English, comparative literature, teachers, and readers who wish to gain a deeper understanding of the continuity, changes, and richness of the English literary tradition.
