Bili Bad / Pisar Barltbi

Bili Bad / Pisar Barltbi

Herman Melville

Two tales of individuals confronting authority: an innocent sailor faces naval justice, while a quiet clerk’s refusal to work exposes a world of alienation.

These two stories explore the individual’s conflict with rules and authority in contrasting settings: a British warship and a lawyer’s office on New York’s Wall Street.

In Billy Budd, a young sailor of generous and trusting character becomes the target of a malicious accusation. Unable to defend himself verbally at a decisive moment, he reacts with tragic consequences. His captain must confront the tension between personal conscience, naval discipline and a law that allows little room for individual circumstances. The maritime narrative becomes a moral inquiry into innocence, violence and the limits of institutional justice.

Bartleby, the Scrivener follows a withdrawn copyist who gradually refuses to perform his duties. His calm, persistent resistance unsettles his employer and disrupts the seemingly rational order of office life. Through irony and the narrator’s growing helplessness, Melville examines alienation, loneliness and the limits of compassion.

Together, these psychological and philosophical tales question systems that measure people by obedience and usefulness. Neither offers comfortable answers to the competing demands of duty, freedom and responsibility towards others.
