Christine James

Set in the picturesque mountains of Colorado, Christine James's classic romance novel "Heartwood" masterfully blends romance with drama, reminding us that the heart, like heartwood, grows stronger in depth.

The main character, Anne Hamilton, a divorced mother of two – eleven-year-old Nicole and a younger child – is struggling with the aftereffects of a bitter divorce from a wealthy surgeon. Her ex-husband has left her, leaving her with a financial and emotional burden, and her relationship with her daughter Nicole is suffering because the child imitates her father’s mocking attitude. At that moment, an unexpected invitation arrives from her long-lost grandmother Sophia, who lives in the luxurious Heartwood mansion and, knowing that her time is running out due to a terminal illness, wants to reconcile with her granddaughter and tell the family secrets that have shaped Anne’s life.

A summer in Heartwood brings healing: Sophia shares wisdom about past decisions, helping Anne forgive and accept her roots, while the children slowly adjust to their new surroundings. However, the idyll is disrupted by an encounter with a surly neighbor, Mark Pascal, a reclusive war veteran and artist who has hidden away in the mountains seeking peace through painting. Mark, marked by personal loss and trauma, sees Anne and the children as an obstacle to his solitude, leading to a series of conflicts and misunderstandings. But through walks together, conversations, and unexpected moments of vulnerability, the walls come down: Anne discovers Mark's depth and strength, and he discovers her courage and warmth.

When Anne's ex-husband shows up with arrogant intentions, testing her resolve, the love between Anne and Mark blossoms into a second chance at happiness. The novel explores themes of forgiveness, family healing, love after loss, and the strength of the female soul, with vivid descriptions of nature that symbolize inner growth.
