The story begins in 1075 in the monastery of St. Stjepan de Pinis by the spacious port of Split, during the reign of King Slavić, husband of Neda, daughter of King Petar Krešimir.

The Normans kidnapped King Slavić, who was soon found dead. Queen Neda wants to go to Italy in search of a husband, but Zvonimir's uncle Streza secretly kidnaps her and locks her in his tower, in order to help Zvonimir get to the throne. Jelena, Zvonimir's wife, takes Neda to the island of Maslinik, but Neda and Vekeneg managed to swim to the shore, where they are captured by Lepa's soldiers and imprisoned in the Bihać tower...
