Der Roman Koraljna vrata (Erstveröffentlichung 1990) regt zum Blick in den literaturhistorischen Rückspiegel an. Mit diesem Roman wird das Barockepos in die zeitgenössische kroatische Literatur integriert. Pavličićs 13. Roman in Folge ist in 20 Kapitel geschrieben. Gundulićs Osman wurde in 20 Gesängen gesungen. Der Roman Koraljna vrata beginnt mit dem Moment, als der Philologe Krsto Brodnjak im Alter von 33 (!) Jahren auf der Suche nach unentdeckten Manuskripten älterer kroatischer Literatur auf der Insel Lastovo ankommt. Die Entdeckung der verlorenen Teile Osmans ist mit der Störung des Verhältnisses zwischen Gut und Böse verbunden.

Der Leser wird in die Geschichte hineingezogen, als wäre er selbst, wie Brodnjak, in die Leere des Epos gefallen. Und das ist das Höchste, was ein Autor mit seinem Text erreichen kann.

Der Roman entstand im Sommer 1989, dem Jahr des großen Jubiläums von Ivan Gundulić (1589 – 1638). Im selben Jahr hielt Pavao Pavličić auf der Gundulić-Konferenz einen Vortrag mit dem Titel „Die Briefe Osmans“. Dieser Text und wie nützlich er für die Interpretation und Bewertung des Romans ist, wird erstmals bei Koraljna vrata veröffentlicht.
