Od Helena do Hrvata

Marin Zaninović

From Hellenes to Croats is a scientific monograph by Marin Zaninović, a Croatian archaeologist, dedicated to the ancient and pre-ancient history of the eastern Adriatic, especially Dalmatia and Hvar.

The collection contains the author's key works on Illyrian tribes, Hellenic colonization, and Roman military history. Zaninović explores the continuity from Greek colonies (Pharos, Issa) to Illyrian communities (Delmati, Liburni) and Roman provinces, emphasizing the cultural and historical connection up to the emergence of the Croats.

The book covers topics such as the Greek parcelization of land on Hvar, where Zaninović discovered one of the best-preserved Hellenic chora in the Mediterranean, and the role of the Delmati in the Illyrian resistance to the Romans. It analyzes Roman camps, legions, and topography, using inscriptions and archaeological finds. Of particular note are the discussions on Pharos, Salona, Burnum, and Narona, with a focus on Illyrian spiritual culture and relations with Rome.

Richly illustrated with historical documents, the book is intended for experts, students, and a wider audience. Zaninović's work emphasizes the importance of archaeology in understanding historical processes, contributing to knowledge of the Croatian past. His conclusions on topographical and chronological issues have lasting value.
