Džep pun žita

Džep pun žita

Agatha Christie

The story begins when a wealthy businessman, Rex Fortescue, dies in his office after drinking tea poisoned with taxiphylline. A strange clue is found in his pocket – a handful of rye grains, which puzzles the police.

Inspector Neele takes over the investigation, but the key to solving the case lies in the hands of the astute Miss Marple. Soon more murders follow: Rex's young wife Adele and his maid Gladys. Each murder is linked to a nursery rhyme, "Sing the Sixpence Song," with a grain of rye referring to the lyrics. Miss Marple, an acquaintance of the murdered Gladys, joins the investigation, using her powers of observation and understanding of human nature. Investigating the Fortescue family, she uncovers a web of secrets, greed, and revenge. Rex's family, including sons Percival and Lance, daughter-in-law Elaine, and others, hide motives related to inheritance and old sin.

Miss Marple connects the murders to the family's past, discovering that the motive is connected to revenge for an ancient crime and the struggle for control of the wealth. The rhyme serves as a code by which the killer leaves clues. Through careful thought, Miss Marple uncovers the culprit, unraveling complex relationships and hidden intentions.

The novel brilliantly combines suspense, psychological depth, and Christie's signature style, making it a classic of the detective genre.
