Zemlja
Zemlja je društveni roman objavljen 1887. godine, deo ciklusa „Rugon-Makar“, u kojem Zola prikazuje brutalnu stvarnost života među francuskim seljacima.
Radnja je smeštena u selo Beauce, gde su zemljište i vlasništvo nad njim glavne životne snage koje pokreću likove. Glavni lik, Žan Mekar, bivši vojnik, seli se u selo i počinje da radi kao nadničar. On se zaljubljuje u Fransoaz, vrednu i poštenu devojku koja pokušava da zaštiti svoje nasledstvo od pohlepe svoje porodice. Fransoaova sestra Liz, udata za farmera Butoa, i njen muž spremni su na sve - uključujući nasilje i zločin - da zadrže što više zemlje.
Centralna tema romana je dehumanizacija izazvana pohlepom za zemljom. Seljaci su prikazani kao brutalni, sebični i beskrupulozni, spremni da žrtvuju porodične veze i osnovne ljudske vrednosti. U ovom surovom svetu, zemlja nije samo sredstvo za preživljavanje, već i predmet žudnje i sukoba.
Zola realistično i prirodno prikazuje težak, često surov život na selu, odbacujući romantične predstave o idiličnom seoskom životu. „Zemlja” je šokirala savremene čitaoce sirovošću svog prikaza, ali se danas smatra jednim od najlepših ostvarenja naturalističke književnosti.
