James Fenimore Cooper
Prvi istaknuti američki romanopisac. Najveći je uspjeh postigao s pet pustolovnih romana o traperima i Indijancima, pod zajedničkim naslovom Priče o Kožnoj Čarapi (The Leatherstocking Tales). U prvim romanima Pioniri (Pioneers, 1823) i Posljednji Mohikanac (The Last of the Mohicans, 1826) opisuje život na granici, tematizirajući sukob divljine i civilizacije; u Preriji (The Prearie, 1827) prikazuje ostarjeloga meditativnog junaka, koji se poistovjećuje s prirodom koja nestaje, dok se u posljednjim romanima Izvidnik (The Pathfinder, 1840) i Lovac na jelene ili Divljačar (The Deerslayer, 1841) približava stilizaciji i idealiziranomu prikazu divljine. Popularni su bili i njegovi povijesni i pomorski romani, od kojih se ističu Uhoda (The Spy, 1821), s radnjom iz doba američkoga rata za neovisnost, te Pilot (The Pilot, 1823) i Morski lavovi (The Sea Lions, 1849), s motivom mora kao simbola čovjekovih vrlina. Pisao je i knjige u kojima zagovara aristokratske političke ideje, npr. Američki demokrat (The American Democrat, 1838).
