Gerald Seymour

In the Heart of Danger is a war thriller by Gerald Seymour set in Croatia during the Croatian War of Independence. Private investigator Bill Penn investigates the death of a young British woman and uncovers traces of war crimes.

In the Heart of Danger is a novel by British writer Gerald Seymour, known for his political and war thrillers based on real conflicts. The story is set in Croatia and the former Yugoslavia during the wars of the 1990s.

The main character is Bill Penn, a former intelligence officer working as a private investigator. He is assigned to investigate the circumstances of the death of Dorrie Mowat, a young Englishwoman whose body was found in a mass grave. Her mother wants to know what happened to her, although she had a bad relationship with her daughter during her lifetime. Penn initially expects routine work, but the investigation takes him deep into the war-torn areas of Croatia and Bosnia.

Collecting testimonies from soldiers, civilians, UNPROFOR members, and local residents, Penn gradually reconstructs Dorrien's life. He reveals that she was a braver and nobler person than her family believed, and that she died trying to help** people caught up in the war. At the same time, he tracks down those responsible for the crimes and comes into conflict with a dangerous local warlord.

The novel provides a convincing depiction of wartime life: the devastated villages around Karlovac, the distrust between the warring parties, the chaos of international missions, and the consequences of ethnic violence. Seymour writes not only a suspenseful thriller, but also a story about personal responsibility, truth, and the attempt to preserve humanity in the midst of war.
