Mirko Martić, Ante Marušić

A high school sociology textbook from 1963 by Mirko Martić and Ante Marušić. An overview of basic concepts of social science for high schools.

"Science of Society" is a school lexicon (first edition in the School Lexicon series) intended for high school students, especially economics students. The authors, Prof. Mirko Martić and Prof. Ante Marušić, have prepared a practical and clear dictionary of key sociological terms adapted to the Yugoslav educational system of the time.

The book systematically explains the basic categories of sociology: society as a whole, social relations, institutions, the structure and dynamics of society, class relations, culture, social processes and changes. It is divided into general sociology, special sociological areas (e.g. sociology of work, village, city, family, politics) and related disciplines (philosophy, psychology, economics, demography, anthropology).

The style is clear, encyclopedic and educational, with an emphasis on the Marxist-socialist interpretation of society while respecting classical sociological authors. As one of the first such lexicons in the Croatian/Serbian language, it served for teaching "Fundamentals of Social Sciences" and popularizing sociology in high school education. It later saw expanded editions under the title "Sociologija" (e.g. Panorama 1966/1967).

Today it is valuable as a document of the development of sociological thought in socialist Yugoslavia in the 1960s. Ideal for students of sociology, historians of science, and those interested in educational literature of the period.
