The main character, Private Robert E. Lee Prewitt, a talented trumpeter and former boxer, refuses to fight on the army boxing team due to past trauma, which causes conflict with his superiors, especially the ruthless Sergeant Judson. Prewitt's stubborn independence and loyalty to his own principles make him an outsider, but also a symbol of resistance to the military hierarchy. In parallel, his friend Angelo Maggio struggles with his own demons, while Sergeant Milton Warden begins a passionate affair with Karen, the wife of his commander, revealing the complexities of love and duty.
The novel is imbued with a naturalistic style, with a detailed depiction of military life, rough dialogue and psychological depth. Jones, a war veteran, authentically captures the brotherhood of soldiers, but also the cruelty of the system that grinds them down. Through Prewitt's struggle for dignity and a tragic end, the novel questions the price of individuality and the inevitability of fate.
From now until eternity it is appreciated for its emotional strength and realistic depiction of military life. Winner of the National Book Award, it remains a classic work of American literature, celebrating the human spirit amidst the chaos of war.
