Tom Doan joins a group of buffalo hunters heading to the inhospitable Staked Plains of the Southwest. Seeing the vast herds there, he sets his sights on making a fortune from their hides. He proves himself an efficient tanner, and what follows is a literal baptism of sweat and blood. Fighting Comanches and Kiowas, some unscrupulous white hunters, and his own conscience, he ages rapidly - increasingly facing obstacles to fulfilling his love for Milly. She, like Tom, is in constant danger on all sides. Ultimately, they can be united in mind and body only if he agrees to her one condition.
