Die Pfeiler der Macht

Die Pfeiler der Macht

Ken Follett

A historical novel about the rise and fall of the London banking family Pilaster in Victorian England. Intrigue, power, money, scandals and the fate of several generations.

The Pillars of Power (1993) is a historical novel by Ken Follett, considered one of his best works in the genre of family sagas. The story takes place in the second half of the 19th century in Victorian England and follows the rise and fall of the powerful Pilaster banking family.

The story centers on Pilaster & Co., one of the most prestigious private banks in London. The family's affairs are managed from the shadows by the strong and ambitious Augusta Pilaster, who is ready to do anything to preserve the family's power and reputation. The novel follows the fates of several generations of the Pilasters and their rivals (especially the Greenbourne family), intertwined with major historical events – from colonial wars, through financial crises, to the social changes of the Victorian era.

Follett masterfully combines personal dramas, love intrigues, financial machinations, scandals and murders. Through the fates of Hugh Pilaster (an ambitious and honest family member), his relatives and rivals, the reader enters the world of high finance, the stock market, the aristocracy and corruption. The novel shows how money shapes destinies, destroys families and changes society.

The book is rich in Victorian-era details – from London salons and clubs to colonies and stock exchange floors. Follett's style is dynamic, tense and easy to read, with numerous twists and turns that keep the reader engaged until the last page.

Die Pfeiler der Macht is a classic family saga with elements of a thriller and a historical novel. A perfect read for fans of great stories about power, money and human passions in the Follett style, similar to The Century or The Fall of Giants.

Follet, autor svjetski poznatih bestselera, opet umješno plete klupko zavjere, izdaje, ljubavi i laži; od rješavanja naizgled bezazlenog slučaja krađe laboratorijske životinje, pa do posljedica koje su izvan naših najluđih snova ili noćnih mora.
