Gospođa Dalloway

Gospođa Dalloway

Virginia Woolf

The novel follows a day in the life of Clarissa Dalloway as she prepares for a party she is hosting at her home. Set in London in 1923, the story explores the inner lives of the characters through the stream-of-consciousness technique, revealing their tho

Clarissa, in her fifties, reflects on life choices, the passage of time, and her youth. While performing entertainment duties, she encounters old friends, including Peter Walsh, a former suitor, whose appearance stirs memories of missed opportunities and a former passion. Clarissa's seemingly perfect life is tinged with a sense of emptiness and questions about meaning.

In parallel, the novel follows Septimus Warren Smith, a war veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Septimus struggles with hallucinations and feelings of alienation, while society and the medical system fail to understand his suffering. His story culminates in a tragic outcome, which deeply shakes Clarissa when she hears about it during her entertainment.

The novel explores themes of mortality, social expectations, mental health, and the conflict between the inner and outer worlds. Through rich, poetic language, Woolf masterfully depicts the fragility of human existence and the complexity of everyday life, connecting the fates of Clarissa and Septimus through universal themes of loss and the search for meaning.
