Jack London’s adventure classic follows the life of a wolf-dog hybrid who, having endured the harshness of the wild and human cruelty, gradually learns to trust and become domesticated through the love and patience of a noble man.
The novel White Fang (1906) by the renowned American writer Jack London is one of the most distinguished works of world literature concerning nature and animals. Conceived as a thematic and mirrored counterpart to the novel The Call of the Wild, this book depicts the reverse trajectory—a transition from raw savagery to civilization and domesticity. The story is set in the harsh, frozen landscapes of the Canadian Yukon Territory during the Klondike Gold Rush. The protagonist, a wolf-dog hybrid named White Fang, grows up in a ruthless environment where the struggle for survival is an everyday reality. After living in the wild and in a Native American camp, he falls into the hands of a cruel owner who exploits him for dogfighting, causing White Fang to become intensely aggressive and distrustful of the world. His fate takes a turn when he meets Weedon Scott, a gentle and fair-minded engineer who, through patience, kindness, and love, succeeds in awakening loyalty, docility, and affection in the wild beast. Through a suspenseful and emotional narrative, London explores the influence of environment on character formation and contrasts the laws of the wild with those of civilization. The novel is a deeply moving and instructive story about survival, redemption, and the power of human compassion.
