Kraj mandata

Kraj mandata

Pavao Pavličić

The End of the Mandate by Pavle Pavličić is a crime novel in which the seemingly routine end of a local official's term turns into an investigation filled with political conflicts, secrets, and crime.

The End of the Mandate is a novel by Croatian writer Pavl Pavličić, which belongs to his opus of crime novels set in the Slavonian and Pannonian environments. The plot takes place in a small environment where political, business and private relationships are closely intertwined, so that every event has consequences for a large number of people.

The story centers on the end of the mandate of an influential local official. What at first glance seems like an ordinary change of government soon becomes much more complex when a series of unusual events raise suspicions that personal interests, old grievances and hidden secrets lie behind official decisions. Some participants in political life try to preserve their position, while others try to use the changes to gain power.

As the plot develops, elements of a criminal investigation appear. Different characters give contradictory statements, and events from the past gradually take on new meaning. Investigators and participants in the events try to reconstruct what really happened and who benefits from concealing the truth. The tension stems from the fact that almost every character has some motive for silence or deception.

The novel does not dwell solely on the crime plot. Pavličić shows the way local politics works, relationships between people in a small community, and the influence of power on personal decisions. Of particular importance are the themes of responsibility, corruption, and the conflict between private interests and the public good.

Thanks to a skillfully constructed plot, convincing characters, and gradual revelation of facts, The End of the Mandate successfully combines a political and crime novel and provides an interesting insight into the mechanisms of government and human nature.
