Marija Jurić Zagorka

The second part of Zagorka's cycle "The Grech Witch". In The Flaming Inquisitors, she combines fiction and historical facts, exploring the reign of Emperor Joseph II, the fight against superstition and religious intolerance, as well as the position of wom

The novel continues the events of the first part of the series, where the main character, Countess Nera, a defiant and brave young woman, becomes a victim of intrigues and persecution under accusations of witchcraft. Living in a time when women were often victims of superstitions and rigid rules of society, Nera fights for justice and the preservation of her dignity, refusing to bow to the powerful and their injustices.

The story takes place in Zagreb, where the fear of witches is spreading and the Inquisition is strengthening its influence. People from different walks of life – from poor citizens to aristocracy – are subject to superstition, and inquisitors abuse their position to gain power and wealth, encouraging "witch" hunts. Nera, together with the mysterious Count Sijan, an intelligent and shrewd nobleman who falls in love with her, uncovers a conspiracy behind the accusations of witchcraft and the persecution of innocent women. Sijan is a man of progressive ideas and a fighter for justice who strives to protect Nera and help her uncover the real truth.

As the plot unfolds, Nera and Sijan face a series of dangers as they try to prevent further oppression of the innocent and free the city from fear and fanaticism. Their struggle is marked by adventures, mysterious events and emotional challenges, including issues of trust and personal doubts. Through the conflict with the powerful inquisitors, Nera and Sijan symbolize the resistance against superstition and bigotry, while finding a way to express their feelings and fight for love.
