Ranjeni pejzaž

Vladimir Mičetić

A book by Vladimir Mičetić, a doctor and volunteer of the Homeland War from Kutina. The work was awarded the literary prize "We Were the First When It Was Necessary" for 2010, awarded by the Association of Croatian Homeland War Veterans.

The book is a memoir-testimonial prose with elements of documentary and literary approach. The author describes and sheds light on the events on the Western Slavonian front (the area of Kutina, Novska, Lipik, Pakrac and the surrounding area) in the first years of the war (1991–1992 and later). As a doctor in a war hospital and in the field, Mičetić witnessed firsthand the wounding, suffering of civilians and soldiers, occupation, persecution, liberation of territories and the consequences of the war.

The title "Wounded Landscape" metaphorically denotes the devastated Slavonian plain – fields, villages, houses, people – but also the wounded soul of the people, identity and country.

The text combines:

  • personal testimonies and diary entries,
  • medical scenes (operations under shellfire, rescuing the wounded),
  • descriptions of the battles and heroism of Croatian defenders,
  • the suffering of exiles and civilians,
  • reflections on the meaning of defending the homeland, sacrifice and reconstruction.

The style is direct, emotional, but restrained – without pathos, with an emphasis on truthfulness and humanity. The author does not idealize war, but shows its cruelty, but also the strength of unity, solidarity and faith in victory.

The book is an important contribution to the memory of the Homeland War in the Western Slavonian region, especially in Moslavina and the surrounding area, where Mičetić was an active participant and witness. It represents a combination of medical humanism, veteran's experience and literary sensitivity, preserving the memory of the "wounded" regions and the people who defended them.
