Mark Twain

Journalism in Tennessee and Other Stories is a selection of 20 short humorous-satirical stories by Mark Twain. The book encompasses Twain's best-known short forms from the period 1865–1905 and is one of the most complete translations of Twain's short stor

The title story, "Journalism in Tennessee" (1871), hilariously parodies the sensationalist journalism of the Wild West - the main character comes to work in an editorial office where the editor resolves every controversy with a revolver, and the newspaper is printed between gunshots.

Other important stories in the collection:

  • The Famous Jumping Frog of Calaveras County - the first story that made Twain famous (1865)
  • How I Edited a Farm Newspaper
  • A 1,000,000 Pound Note
  • Is He Alive or Dead?
  • The Diary of Adam and Eve (a humorous bible from the perspective of the first couple)

Twain uses typical techniques here: exaggeration, a "dead serious" narrator who does not understand the absurd, vernacular, sudden twists and sharp social criticism beneath the surface of laughter. The collection excellently demonstrates how Twain developed from a harmless "entertainer" of the Wild West into one of the greatest American satirists and critics of hypocrisy, greed, and petty bourgeoisie.
