Nenad Ivanković

The book What We Did to Him by journalist and publicist Nenad Ivanković presents a personal and political reflection on the circumstances of the arrest, trial, and verdict of Generals Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markač before the Hague Tribunal.

Published in 2011, immediately after the first-instance verdict was pronounced, the book analyzes the role of Croatian political elites, the media, and international actors in the process that caused deep divisions in Croatian society.

Ivanković critically approaches the behavior of politicians who, in his opinion, avoided responsibility and abandoned the generals to international justice without adequate political and diplomatic protection. The author points out that many political actors publicly expressed outrage at the verdicts, even though their actions had previously contributed to the situation that led to them.

The book does not offer simple answers, but rather calls for introspection and a reconsideration of collective responsibility. Ivanković does not spare criticism of either the international community or domestic institutions, pointing to the moral devastation and disorientation of the society that allowed the heroes of the Homeland War to find themselves in the dock.

What We Did to Him is not just a chronicle of a trial, but also an invitation to reflect on values, identity, and responsibility in post-war Croatian society.
