Die Geschichte spielt während des Deutsch-Französischen Krieges (1870–1871) und beginnt mit der Flucht französischer Bürger aus dem preußisch besetzten Rouen. Unter ihnen ist Elizabeth Rousset, „Dunda“, ein Mädchen mit einfacher Moral, aber gutem Herzen.
Die Gruppe besteht aus Angehörigen unterschiedlicher sozialer Schichten – wohlhabenden Kaufleuten, Aristokraten und Nonnen – die allesamt Dunda auf zutiefst heuchlerische Weise für ihren Beruf verurteilen. Als jedoch ein preußischer Offizier ihre Reise stoppt und ihre Durchfahrt davon abhängig macht, dass Dunda die Nacht bei ihm verbringt, ändert sich die Situation. Zunächst lehnen alle die Idee ab und unterstützen Dundas Weigerung, doch mit der Zeit gelingt es ihnen unter Druck und Manipulation, sie zum Nachgeben zu bewegen – alles, um sicherzustellen, dass sie ihre Reise fortsetzen können.
Dunda willigt schließlich ein, sich zum Wohle aller zu opfern, doch nachdem sie ihre Forderungen erfüllt hat, wird sie von ihren Gefährten erneut verachtet und ignoriert. Die Geschichte endet mit der Szene einer gedemütigten und gebrochenen Dunda, die leise weint, während die anderen Passagiere sie kalt zurückweisen.
In „Dundas“ übt Maupassant scharfe Kritik an der menschlichen Heuchelei, den gesellschaftlichen Vorurteilen und der Selbstsucht und zeichnet das eindrucksvolle Porträt eines moralisch überlegenen Individuums, das der gesellschaftlichen Heuchelei zum Opfer fällt. Die Geschichte ist eines seiner berühmtesten und bedeutendsten Werke und wird für ihre realistische Kraft und psychologische Tiefe geschätzt.
