Čiča Goriot je priča o starome ratnom profiteru Goriotu i njegovim kćerima, koje ga, nakon što su ga opljačkale do gole kože, ostavljaju da umre u samoći i bijedi pansiona Vaquer, priča je koja se danas može čitati na nekoliko razina.

Radnja romana smještena je u siromašni pansion gospođe Walker, gdje živi starac Goriot, nekadašnji bogati proizvođač tjestenine, sada osiromašen zbog bezgranične ljubavi prema svojim kćerima — Anastasiji i Delphine. Uz njega u pansionu živi mladi student prava, Eugène de Rastinac, ambiciozni provincijalac koji dolazi u Pariz sa željom da uspije u društvu.

Goriot je simbol očinske samopožrtvovnosti - dao je cijelo svoje bogatstvo da bi svoje kćeri doveo u visoko društvo, ali ga sada, posramljene njegovom jadnom situacijom, gotovo potpuno ignoriraju. Eugène, očaran luksuzom i moći, ulazi u svijet visokog društva uz pomoć tajanstvenog Vautrina, kriminalca i manipulatora, no istodobno se zbližava s Goriotom i postaje svjedokom njegove tragične sudbine.

U trenutku kada se Goriot teško razboli, Eugène pokušava pozvati svoje kćeri, ali one, zaokupljene svojim društvenim i ljubavnim intrigama, ne dolaze. Goriot umire slomljena srca, napušten i zaboravljen, dok Eugène shvaća okrutnost svijeta kojemu želi pripadati. Na sprovodu nema nikoga osim Eugenea i dvojice plaćenih nosača.
