Ovo je jedno od značajnih djela, odražavajući njezin angažman u društvenim temama i razvoj književnog stila, koji se postupno udaljavao od shematske socijalne proze prema modernijoj narativnoj strukturi.

Roman istražuje složena ljudska iskustva, vjerojatno crpeći inspiraciju iz Ribnikarine partizanske prošlosti i društveno-političkog konteksta Jugoslavije. Prema književnom kritičaru Jovanu Deretiću, Ribnikarina djela iz 1960-ih, uključujući Pobedu i poraz, označavaju njezin umjetnički razvoj, u skladu s modernizacijom srpske proze tog razdoblja.
