Nedostižni dvorac jedno je od autorovih poznatijih djela koje se bavi porodičnim odnosima, nasljeđem, društvenim promjenama i moralnim dilemama, smješteno u Englesku tijekom burnog 20. stoljeća.

Radnja romana vjerojatno se vrti oko porodične kuće ili imanja – simbolično nazvanog "dvorac" – koje kroz generacije predstavlja san, sigurnost i prestiž. Glavni likovi, često mlađi nasljednici ili idealisti, teže tom "dvorcu", ali ga nikada istinski ne dosežu – bilo zbog osobnih slabosti, društvenih prepreka ili moralnih kompromisa. Roman prikazuje sudbine više likova povezanih obiteljskim, ljubavnim i društvenim vezama, kroz desetljeća velikih povijesnih previranja (ratovi, klasne borbe, promjene vrijednosti). Kao i u drugim Springovim romanima, fokus je na unutarnjem razvoju likova, njihovim dilemama i sukobima između prošlosti i sadašnjosti.
