Glavni lik romana je Alan, mladić koji odrasta u siromaštvu u industrijskom gradu na sjeveru Engleske. Kao dijete, zbog zdravstvenih razloga, šalju ga u Cornwall, gdje ga smješta dobrostojeća i plemenita obitelj. Tamo upoznaje gospođu, zrelu ženu snažne osobnosti, koja će mu postati mentorica, moralni uzor i simbol ljepote i dostojanstva. Kroz godine, Alan se sjeća njezina utjecaja, ali i cijelog spleta ljudi koje je upoznao tijekom svog boravka na selu — svaki od njih ostavio je trag u njegovoj duši i oblikovao ga kao osobu. Roman je melankolična priča o formiranju identiteta, o dobroti i razočaranju, o ljubavi koja nije uvijek romantična, već često ima oblik prijateljstva, nježnosti ili ljudske topline.
