Imaginarni Turčin

Imaginarni Turčin

Božidar Jezernik

The twentieth century is a world of the formation of a "global village." Peoples whom people of earlier times knew only through the stories of travelers have colored the everyday life of the twentieth century with their colorful culture.

The monograph The Imaginary Turk, created on the basis of scientific meetings between Slovenian and Turkish scholars, deals with the important issue of the “Turk” as a significant European Other, which has been developing over the past five hundred years and still appears today in the negotiation process between the European Union and the Republic of Turkey on Turkey’s membership in the EU. The impression is that in these negotiations the “Turk” still appears in the role of a deus ex machina that obscures some important issues on the agenda, while not resolving any of them. The aim of the authors of The Imaginary Turk was to contribute with this monograph to the illumination and explanation of some of the initial questions of this process, which will occupy European diplomacy and journalism for at least the next decade.
