Die Geschichte spielt während des Zweiten Weltkriegs und in der Nachkriegszeit und begleitet das Leben des Protagonisten, der mit Gewalt, Ungerechtigkeit und schwierigen Lebensentscheidungen konfrontiert wird. Anhand seiner Erlebnisse schildert sie den Alltag gewöhnlicher Menschen unter Kriegsbedingungen sowie die moralischen Dilemmata, die der Kampf ums Überleben mit sich bringt.
