Pjesme I – Lirske pjesme, Prigodnice, Šaljive pjesme, Epigrami

August Šenoa

Book 9 of the Collected Works of August Šenoa brings a selection of his most significant poetry. From romantic and patriotic lyrical poems to occasional poems to witty humorous poems and sharp epigrams – all in Šenoa's recognizable style.

Poems I – Lyrical Poems, Occasional Poems, Jokes, Epigrams is the 9th book of Collected Works of August Šenoa published by Naklada knjižara Preporod. This volume brings a rich selection of Šenoa's poetry and represents an important part of his literary oeuvre that is often overlooked in comparison to prose.

The first part is dominated by lyrical poems – romantic, intimate and patriotic, filled with love for the homeland, nature and women. Here Šenoa shows his romantic enthusiasm, melancholy and sincere emotion. Occasional Poems include poems written on the occasion of certain events, anniversaries and national celebrations, reflecting the author's engagement in the Croatian national revival.

Jokes and Epigrams bring a completely different, witty and satirical tone. Here Šenoa shows himself as a sharp critic of social flaws, hypocrisy and petty bourgeoisie, writing sharply, ironically and with a lot of humor. His epigrams are often short, precise and deadly, which makes them true little masterpieces of satire.

This edition, as well as the entire Preporod edition (1942–1943), is adorned with recognizable and artistically powerful illustrations by Andrija Maurović. His drawings on the cover and inside the book give the poetry a visual dimension and a special antiquarian charm, making this volume a real pleasure for the eyes and soul.

The book is excellent for lovers of 19th-century Croatian poetry, those who want to get to know the complete Šenou – not only a novelist and storyteller, but also a lyricist, patriot and satirist. It is easy to read, and Maurović's illustrations make it especially attractive to collectors.

The title poem, "The Black Rabbit," represents a kind of symbolist maneuver within "real" poetry, because like Baudelaire's "Albatross," it possesses a pronounced unambiguous charge.
