Schwabovo djelo obnavlja osjećaj za vrijednost starine, Taj nepresušni izvor narodne fantazije koja nastoji protumačiti i objasniti svijet izvornom pjesničkom snagom koja se prepoznaje u predanjima antičkog čovjeka.

Grčki su mitovi posebno obilježili samu osnovu čitave zapadne kulture, raznolikih su motiva i velike pjesničke ljepote. Olimpski, podzemni i morski bogovi, niža božanstva, te heroji koji su po ocu ili majci božanskog podrijetla, glavni su junaci ovih mitskih priča. Najpoznatiji su Prometej, Heraklo, Tezej, Dioskuri, Jazon, Perzej, Ahilej, Melagar, a i mnogi drugi koji izvršavaju često tegobne i opasne zadaće koje im zadaju bogovi ili od bogova naslijeđeni običaji. Schwab obrađuje veće mitološke cikluse, kao što su Trojanski rat, ali tu su i poznati junaci Dedal i Ikar, Argonauti, Orfej i Euridika, Antigona i mnoštvo drugih.
