Howard Phillips Lovecraft

Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890–1937) was an American writer of horror, fantasy, and science fiction, best known for creating the mythical universe of the "Cthulhu Mythos". He was born in Providence, Rhode Island, where he spent most of his life. Although he remained relatively unknown and poor during his lifetime, he is now considered a key figure in modern horror literature.

Lovecraft's writing is characterized by cosmological horror – a sense of human insignificance in the face of indifferent, supernatural forces. His best-known works include The Call of Cthulhu, The Shadow of Innsmouth, The Dunwich Horror, and At the Mountains of Madness. He often used false mythology, ancient books such as the Necronomicon, and forgotten civilizations, creating a complex universe that was later expanded upon by other authors.

He was also a prolific essayist, corresponding with numerous writers, and influencing a generation of horror and fantasy writers. Lovecraft wrote in a rich, archaic style, blending scientific rationality with supernatural and mythological motifs.

He died at the age of 46 of colon cancer and poverty, but posthumously acquired cult status, and his work continues to inspire literature, films, games, and popular culture.
