Mark Twain

Mark Twain (bürgerlicher Name Samuel Langhorne Clemens, 1835–1910) war ein amerikanischer Schriftsteller, Humorist und Satiriker, der vor allem für seine Romane Die Abenteuer des Tom Sawyer (1876) und Die Abenteuer des Huckleberry Finn (1884) bekannt ist, die als Klassiker der amerikanischen Literatur gelten. Geboren am 30. November 1835 in Florida, Missouri, wuchs er in Hannibal auf, einer kleinen Stadt am Mississippi, die ihn als Schauplatz seiner Werke inspirierte. Nach dem Tod seines Vaters 1847 verließ Twain die Schule und arbeitete als Druckergehilfe, was ihn zum Journalismus führte.

1857 wurde er Lotse auf Mississippi-Dampfschiffen, und sein Pseudonym „Mark Twain“ („Zwei-Faden-Marke“) stammt aus der Flussterminologie. Während des Bürgerkriegs diente er kurzzeitig in der Konföderierten-Miliz, widmete sich dann aber dem Schreiben. Sein erster erfolgreicher Roman, die Kurzgeschichte „Der berühmte Springfrosch von Calaveras County“ (1865), machte ihn berühmt. Werke wie „Die Arglosen im Ausland“ (1869) und „Leben am Mississippi“ (1883) verbinden Reiseberichte, Humor und Gesellschaftskritik. Huckleberry Finn behandelt Themen wie Sklaverei, Moral und Freiheit anhand der Abenteuer eines Jungen und des entlaufenen Sklaven Jim. Twains scharfer Humor und seine Satire, wie etwa in „Ein Yankee an König Artus‘ Hof“ (1889), verspotten gesellschaftliche Normen.

Trotz seines literarischen Erfolgs hatte er aufgrund von Fehlinvestitionen finanzielle Probleme. Er hielt weltweit Vorträge und schrieb sein Leben lang. Er starb am 21. April 1910 in Redding, Connecticut.
