Kornelije Tacit

Publius Cornelius Tacitus (c. 56 – after 120), a Roman historian, orator, and statesman, was born around the year 56 and died likely after 120. He is considered one of the greatest historians of ancient Rome and one of the most significant figures in Roman historiography. His works are characterized by political insight, moral criticism, psychological analysis, and an exploration of the relationship between power and liberty.
Little reliable information remains regarding his origins and early life. He received an excellent education in rhetoric and pursued a successful political career. He served as a senator, as consul in 97, and as proconsul of the province of Asia around 112. He lived during the reigns of the emperors Vespasian, Titus, Domitian, Nerva, and Trajan.
His first known work, Agricola (De vita et moribus Iulii Agricolae, 98), is a biography of his father-in-law, the Roman general Julius Agricola. In it, he describes the Roman conquest of Britain and examines the virtues of a statesman, tyranny, and moral responsibility.
In the work Germania (De origine et situ Germanorum, 98), he presents an ethnographic and geographical account of the Germanic tribes, their customs, social organization, and warrior values. The work serves as an important source for the study of ancient Europe. The Dialogue on Orators (Dialogus de oratoribus) is dedicated to Roman rhetoric and the causes of the decline of oratory during the Imperial era.
His most extensive historical works are the Histories (Historiae), covering events from the year 69 onwards, and the Annals (Annales), dedicated to the history of the Roman Empire from the death of Augustus in 14 AD to the age of Nero. Both works have survived only in part.
Tacitus pays particular attention to the abuse of power, political intrigue, corruption, fear, and the loss of republican freedoms. His style is characterized by brevity, dramatic intensity, irony, and powerful characterization of historical figures.
Tacitus's works remain indispensable sources for understanding the Roman Principate, political history, and human nature, and his critical view of power has profoundly influenced later European historiography and political thought.
