Rudolfo F. Magjer
Rudolfo Franjin Magjer (Zemun, 28 September 1884 – Osijek, 31 May 1954), Croatian writer, pedagogue, publicist and cultural activist.
Born in Zemun, he lived in Osijek from his earliest youth, where he graduated from the Teacher's School (1903) and passed the teacher's exam (1913). He worked as a teacher in Šljivoševci (1903–1906) and Valpovo (1906–1909), then in Osijek as a teacher in the Teacher's School's gymnasium, school superintendent and teacher in Građanska škola until his retirement in 1943.
He began his literary career while still a student. He published his first poems in Bršljan (1899) and Pobratim (1900). He published his first collection of poetry Porivi in 1905, and already in 1907 a collection of narrative prose Zapisci sa sela. He compiled an anthology of Croatian youth literature U pjesmi i priči (1906). From 1909 he led the "Club of Croatian Writers and Artists in Osijek" (president 1920–1941), which promoted Croatian books and the Croatian language and published anthologies and almanacs (Mi, Jeka od Osijek). He launched a children's magazine Milodarke (1913).
Works (selection): poetry – Porivi (1905, 1908), Novi zvuci (1909), Moj put (1916/1917), Erotika (1918), Pjesme iz osama (1922); prose – Sa slavonske ravni (1913), Iz naših sela (1913), Crveni križ (1915), Zvono u vodi (1931), Miholjčice and Valpovčice (1932); for children and youth – Slavice (1905), Majčine pripovijesti, Đurđice, Zlatna ribica and others; epigrams – Učiteljski i drugi epigrami (1935); journalism and other – Croats in Serbia (with V. Magjer's oeuvre is extensive and diverse in genre – from romantic and impressionist lyrics, regional realistic prose about the Slavonian countryside, to pedagogical and children's literature and journalism. Criticized for hyperproduction and self-promotion, he is nevertheless significant for Osijek and Slavonian culture in the first half of the 20th century. He collaborated in numerous magazines (Narodna obrana, Hrvatska obrana, Prosvjeta, etc.). Translated into several languages, represented in anthologies. His legacy is kept in the Osijek City and University Library.
His work reflects deep commitment to Croatian identity, the Slavonian homeland, the education of youth, and the promotion of culture in the regional environment.
