Silvije Strahimir Kranjčević

Silvije Strahimir Kranjčević was born on February 17, 1865 in Senj to the family of civil servants Spiridion Kranjčević and Marija Marković. As the eldest son, he grew up in poverty and an atmosphere of national revival. He attended high school in Senj, but due to rebellious behavior he did not graduate. He briefly spent time at the Senj seminary and in Rome at the Collegium Germanicum-Hungaricum, preparing for the priesthood, which he quickly abandoned. After his return, he lived in Zagreb, and from 1893 until his death he worked in Sarajevo as a professor and editor of the magazine Nada. In 1898, he married Gabrijel Kašaj. He died on October 29, 1908 in Sarajevo from tuberculosis at the age of 43. He was buried in Sarajevo, and his grave was later moved to Senj.

Kranjčević is the most important Croatian poet of realism and the founder of modernity. Croatian poetry owes him a strong patriotic, social and philosophical tone with biblical and ancient motifs. His main themes are the fate of the homeland, human suffering, faith, freedom and universal existential questions. As editor of the magazine Nada from 1895 to 1908, he had a great influence on the cultural life of Bosnia and Herzegovina and published the first translation of Pirandello in the world. He was right-wing oriented, but in his poetry he went beyond narrow political frameworks.

His main works are Bugarkinje (1885), Izabrane pjesme (1898), Trzaji (1902) and Pjesme (1908). He wrote a total of 421 poems, and he also published short stories, feuilletons, criticism and translations. The collected works were published several times, the most important being the critical edition from 1967.

Kranjčević's poetry marked an entire era and strongly influenced Tino Ujević, Matoš and many later poets. Verses such as "Our Croatian mother, you are painful, you are old" became a symbol of national destiny and suffering. His work remains the highlight of Croatian poetry of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, combining romantic enthusiasm, realism and modern sensitivity.
