Mazzini, tragedija idealiste

Adolf Saager

"Mazzini, the tragedy of an idealist" is a novelized biography of the Swiss writer Adolf Saager, which deals with the life and ideas of Giuseppe Mazzini, an Italian revolutionary, politician and philosopher from the 19th century.

Saager's book explores Mazzini's idealism, his struggle for the unification of Italy, and the conflict between personal sacrifices and political goals.

The book follows key moments in Mazzini's life, from his youthful ideals of freedom and justice to his later political disappointments. The main focus is on Mazzini's internal struggle between his high moral and political ideals and the reality that often compromises his goals.

Mazzini is portrayed as a dedicated fighter for the freedom and unification of Italy, guided by the vision of a just and free society. He founds the Young Italy organization and initiates a series of revolutionary activities. His idealism comes at a price – estrangement from his family, hostility from political opponents and failed revolutions that cost him many friendships and alliances.

Saager points out that Mazzini's ideals often conflict with the pragmatic reality of politics. His commitment often leaves him isolated, and his vision fails to be fully realized.
