"The Zrinski-Frankopan Conspiracy" is a historical novel by Eugen Kumičić that describes in detail the events of the 17th century, focusing on the attempt of Croatian nobles, the Zrinski and Frankopan families, to break free from Habsburg domination and create an independent Croatian state. The action takes place between 1664 and 1671, covering places such as Ozalj, Novigrad, Karlovac, Čakovec, Vienna and Venice. Kumičić faithfully depicts the atmosphere of that period, combining historical facts with elements of romanticism and realism. Through detailed descriptions of political intrigues, family relationships and personal tragedies, the author emphasizes the courage and patriotism of the main characters, especially Petr Zrinski and Fran Krsta Frankopan. Their fight against the absolutist rule of the Habsburgs and their tragic fate symbolize the aspirations of the Croatian people for freedom and independence. The novel also emphasizes the importance of preserving national identity and cultural heritage, serving as a reminder of the sacrifices made for the homeland.
