At the beginning of his journey through the countries of the Middle East, Poirot accidentally overhears a casual conversation about a murder.
The remark: "You do realize, don't you, that she has to be killed?" follows him the whole way, but he considers her quite harmless - until the moment a crime actually happens. Between the towering red rocks of Petra, like some huge and bloated statue of Buddha, was the body of Mrs. Boynton. A small puncture mark on her thick, fleshy wrist was the only sign of the fatal injection that killed her. With only twenty-four hours to solve the puzzle, and with a wide range of potential perpetrators, Hercule Poirot recalls the aforementioned remark and concludes that Mrs. Boynton was truly the most hated woman he had ever met and that many wished her dead...
